Being a first time mom, it can be incredibly daunting when left with the task to buy stuff for your new arrival, especially when there’s so much stuff out there for babies these days. It honestly made my head spin and I really didn’t know what to spend my money on. I scoured the internet for ages, asking on popular baby forums what was everyone’s must haves. I got great suggestions from these groups and narrowed it down to what I thought I might need for my baby. So, on that note, here’s my top 6 newborn must haves.
1. Angelcare Monitor
If I didn’t discover this product, I wouldn’t have slept a wink in the first few weeks of my daughter’s life. I constantly would have been standing by her cot, poking her to see if she was breathing or not. The Angelcare monitor gives you peace of mind that your baby is breathing steadily and moving around safely in their bed.
This might not be for everyone, but for me, it was a lifesaver and it definitely deserves its spot at number one. If your baby was to stop moving/breathing, it would sound a warning alarm, if your child continues to not move/breathe for a further ten seconds, it sounds another alarm ,so you can take appropriate action if needed. Not once did it sound falsely for me and I’ve been using it for three months. I bought mine on Amazon last year in a Christmas sale but they usually retail for about EUR 80.00.
2. MAM Bottles
This will highly depend on your baby as every baby is different. I originally used Tommee Tippee bottles, but I found the milk leaked out of them quite a lot. My daughter also took in a lot of air with them, so I switched to these bottles. The reviews were just outstanding for them, however they are a bit pricey (EUR 9.00 per bottle), but definitely worth it. Argos tend to deals on them all the time, so always watch out for those. You can get them in a variety of colours and sizes. They’re self sterilizing, which means you can just pop them in the microwave with a bit of water, and it’s done in ten minutes, so it makes them very handy if you’re out and about and don’t have access to a sterilizer.
3. Cocoonababy Nest
If you don’t want to buy a Moses basket, The Cocoonababy nest is the next best thing. It’s one of the most highly recommended baby products I’ve come across, and after buying it, I can honestly see why. It’s suitable from birth to 4 months, you can place it inside your baby’s cot, it helps with reflux if your baby suffers from it as your baby’s head is slightly propped up inside it, and it’s portable, so you can move it all around the house. I bought mine on amazon for EUR 160.00, so it’s definitely on the more expensive side, but I honestly think it’s worth every penny.
4. Angelcare Bath
Trying to bathe your newborn can be daunting, so having any product to make it easier is a must have in my opinion. The Angelcare bath is one of those products as its non slip, small and most importantly, comfortable for baby. Since using this product, my daughter loves bath time. She hated it when my partner and I washed her in the sink, but ever since using this, there hasn’t been one scream. Mine was bought in Argos for EUR 25.00.
5. Muslin Cloths
This product is pretty self-explanatory, babies spit up A LOT and you’re going to need quite a few of these bad boys. I was silly enough to believe that six or seven was enough to get me through a few days. I went through at least six a day. So, get yourself down to your nearest Penneys, where you can pick them up for as little as EUR 4.00 for a pack of three.
6. Baby swing
If you ever plan to do house work again with a newborn, a baby swing is an essential purchase to be made. You can maneuver it around the house easily, so baby can go wherever you go. Most swings play music and have little toys on the bar in front of them, so baby isn’t bored while you rush around the house like a mad woman trying to get all the cleaning done. I purchased the bright starts swing, (as seen in the image above) on amazon for EUR 60.00 and I’m very impressed with it. My little girl loves it. Most swings do the same thing, which is soothe your baby, so there’s no need to spend a lot of money on one.
That’s if for my newborn must haves. Let me know in the comments below if you used any of the products mentioned above or if you have anything to add to the list that you think would be also be essential for new mothers.
